AMURT and AMURTEL Relief in Puerto Rico – An Update

by Ac. Vimaleshananda Avt.

The relief activities in Puerto Rico are ongoing in full speed . Just before Christmas a container of supplies sent by AMURT and AMURTEL has reached Mayaguez . The Institute of Community Development of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez has taken care of receiving the goods which includes 4.000 solar lights, a community size water purifier , emergency kits and other primary supplies. The distribution is ongoing.

It takes time to deliver door to door in the remote communities in the mountains of Puerto Rico where till today electricity  and water are not available. The institute of community development of the University is organizing the communities for self-sufficiency .

On January 13 2018 there was an activity in the indoor court of the Indiera Baja sector in the town of Maricao, Puerto Rico. In this activity three communities received help: Indiera Baja, Indiera Alta and Indiera Fría. The activity ran from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm and impacted around 300 families. 250 meals were prepared and served by students and faculty of the University.

The pictures that were prepared by students of a primary school of Raleigh in North Carolina as an act of solidarity for the victims of Hurricane Maria were handed over and displayed in the Secundo Ruiz Belvis school in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Gracias = Thank you to Advaeta Deva who came as a volunteer of AMURT from Raleigh and carried the precious gift of love.

CHRISTIAN DISASTER RESPONSE is the organization that helped AMURT and AMURTEL for the shipment of the container to Puerto Rico . They have another shipment of Recovery supplies ready to ship.  They are in need of funding. Please refer to for donations to Puerto Rico Relief ongoing operation .
